Philippians 2:5-11
I
chose to reflect upon Philippians 2:5-11 because it is a lesson in
humility. Being humble is such a virtue
but often hard to keep in check. We live in a very materialistic and status
oriented society, and humbleness is something hard to achieve since it is
tempting us daily. Jesus Christ was GOD! What status! Like no other! However, He
came to us as a human, in our own likeness, born as a peasant but King of the
world. Knowing He was the Almighty, He still lived selflessly and obedient to
the Father. He kept His great purpose in check with humility. He died, not as
an earthly King, but as an obedient and humble servant to his Creator. Never
rising to the ultimate "status" He could have had, especially being
tempted to succumb to Satan and the authorities' temptations, He humbly lived
by the Father's obedience.
I
am grateful to live in the great state of Texas, and in particular,
Houston. But what comes along with that
because of our city's success and especially in our area of town, is the
complication of “status” and materialism.
I am currently in a situation where I am dealing with this among some
very “status” oriented individuals and so Philippians 2:5-11 was very
appropriate for me to meditate on. I am being challenged to “keep it all in
check,” knowing that I am 'Me" not “Them,” and praying that I am not
tempted to rise up to something I am not. Jesus was honored by His Father for
living the life He was sent here to do in humbleness and obedience. I must try
to follow in His humble footsteps in the same manner, knowing myself, staying
on level ground, even though the temptation is ever present.
Lord,
bestow upon me your ability to reject temptation and live humbly and obediently
as “myself,” the person You created me to be.
In Your name I pray! Amen.
