1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Mark 8:11-26

As I do whenever I try to discern which passage to write about for our Lenten meditation book, or really whenever I have spoken to our Holy Spirit family over the years, I first pray to our Lord for guidance and ask him to lead me as he deems appropriate.

When reading the various passages of the Bible in preparation for this Lenten meditation, I was immediately drawn to 1 Corinthians 12:1–11 and I knew God had intended for me to discuss this passage with our Holy Spirit family.

We are blessed to have so many people of varying talents here at Holy Spirit to help spread the word and love of our savior Jesus Christ. I know that many times I feel inadequate when I look at the talents and contributions of others toward spreading the news and good works of Christ. Why didn’t I start some life changing ministry such as Blessings in a Backpack or why haven’t I been taking communion to our family members as a Lay Eucharistic minister? But this passage reminds me that God is not judging me in this manner, rather I am judging myself in this manner. God has given each of us different talents and he does not judge us on how our talents stack up against those of our neighbors. Instead, God merely wants us to use those talents that he has given us to our fullest ability in order to help others know his love and compassion.

I would challenge each of us during this Lenten season to determine how God wants us to use those unique talents he has given to each of us to further his will and then to employ those gifts and talents to his glory.
