Genesis 42:18-28
Psalms 72, 119:73-96
1 Corinthians 5:9-6:8
Mark 4:1-20
Mark 4:1-20

"Listen!  A farmer went out to sow his seed.  As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path and the birds came and ate it up…other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants…He who has ears to hear, let him hear."  Then Jesus said to [the Twelve], "Don't you understand this parable?  How then will you understand any parable?"

We can almost feel and hear in our Lord's words in this oft quoted parable, the frustration that those He has chosen to carry on His ministry here on Earth are just not getting the point of who He is, and what He is trying to teach them.  Perhaps all of us who know the joy and pain of parenthood can relate to this parable more than any other, as, like the farmer, we attempt to sow seeds in the form of words of wisdom, responsibility and good judgment to our children.  Often it may seem we might have just saved our breath, as we see them wander inevitably into making the same mistakes we warned them about, and likely made ourselves.  And yet perhaps that is what this Lenten season is all about - a reminder to us that whatever pain and difficulty we are going through, our Father in Heaven went through it a million times over, having to watch His Son, well, we know how the story goes…but then, we also know how it ends.

Glory be to God in the Highest!
